The state of California and the City of San Francisco have legislated specific procedures which must be followed when doing any construction, repair, renovation, painting or wrecking of a building that contains lead-based paint.

Lead poses huge health problems especially to children.

The laws apply to properties constructed before 1978 (when lead-based paint was outlawed) but may apply to properties built after that date because even though the paint was no longer formulated, there was still a lot of it being used.

The laws cover jobs as small as replacing an electrical plug and as large as painting a property’s facade. Huge fines, as high as $37,500, can be assessed for first time infractions.
